The Friday four

Lorraine came to the Hub at Eve's invitation (Monday's crew) after hearing her talk at Harvest Festival. She found the premises smaller than she expected, Lorraineand four months later is still waiting to use the giant tin of plum tomatoes she bought with her! (She thinks it will probably end up as a mammoth soup.) She says it takes ages to get to know all the names, and in the case of the service users, they can move on before she has got them all off pat. She does however recall her pleasure at an encounter with one man who proudly told her of his new job. "I do find it sad when we have to turn away people who are not yet ready to take on what the Hub is offering," she admits. "That is one of the toughest things." Like many of the other volunteers, she would love to see the Hub expand. The rest of us suspect she is determined to use up the tomatoes!

Jez used to volunteer when the centre was based at the church hall in Durngate StreetJez and was there, issuing weekend meal tickets when it moved to the present site. Although working full time, he knew he wanted to do something worthwhile with his day off, rather than spend it on the X-box. His curiosity led him to follow up an advert for volunteers. Already accepting of different lifestyles, he still feels he has learnt to be even more open. "It's so very different to the often negative way homeless people are portrayed in the media," he argues. "They are not 'one big lump' but totally different individuals."
The other half of the Friday four couldn't stop to talk, being too busy buttering the toast, pouring the tea and serving it up before it got cold!
